ISO14001

ISO 14001 is the international standard for an environmental management system. It has been used by tens of thousands of companies world-wide to assess their environmental performance. Key principles in the standard include commitments to:
• comply with environmental legislation
• prevent pollution
• continually improve environmental performance

It shares common management principles with the ISO 9001 quality standard, but addresses environmental protection issues. It involves the development of environmental policy, the determination of an organisation's environmental impacts, the development of measurable objectives to mitigate against these impacts, the implementation of a programme to address them, and a programme of continuous review and management. It covers all environmental aspects including energy management, water conservation, waste reduction and more.

BS8555

This British Standard enables small and medium sized businesses to implement an environmental management system in six discrete steps. It's easier than tackling ISO 14001 in one go, yet enables organisations to show their customers that they have a sound environmental awareness and an audited system in place to address environmental impacts.
It is managed in the UK by IEMA (The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) where it is known as the Acorn Scheme. Advantages include:
• EMS implementation is broken down into a series of logical, convenient and more manageable phases
• A clearly defined route to ISO14001 certification, with UKAS accredited recognition along the way if required
• Flexible time-scale for implementation
• Environmental performance improvements will reduce costs and improve business efficiency from an early stage
• Opportunities to engage supply chain partners (both customers and suppliers) on environmental performance
• The option of an entry on the IEMA Acorn Register
• Principles of environmental management are learned during the process - you develop the necessary in-house skills to continue to manage the EMS

Isostasy can lay the foundations for BS8555 for you, then guide you through the standard, providing training as required. For more information or to request our standard rate card, email office@isostasy.co.uk.
