ISO14001
This international standard, published in 1996 and revised in 2004 has
been adopted by tens of thousands of companies world-wide to establish
their environmental performance at a benchmark level.
The key principles in the standard are commitments
to:
- comply with environmental legislation
- prevent pollution
- continually improve environmental performance
It shares common management principles with the
ISO 9001:2000 quality standard, but is geared to addressing the evolving
needs of society for environmental protection.
Its key elements are policy and plans, implementation, operation, checking
and review insofar as all environmental aspects of an organisation are
concerned.
BS8555
This British Standard enables small and medium sized
businesses to implement an environmental management system with relative
ease. It's easier than tackling ISO 14001 in one step, yet enables you
to show your customers that you have a solid environmental awareness
and an audited system in place to prove your worth as a supplier.
It is managed in the UK by IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management
and Assessment) under the Acorn flag. Further information is available
at their web site www.iema.net/acorn.
The advantages are:
- EMS implementation is broken down into a series of logical, convenient,
manageable phases
- There is a clearly defined route plan to ISO14001 certification, with
UKAS accredited recognition along the way if required
- You determine the time scale for implementation - how fast and how
far you want to progress
- Environmental performance improvement can lead to reduced costs and
improved business efficiency at an early stage
- It creates opportunities to engage supply chain partners (both customers
and suppliers) in environmental performance improvement
- There is the option of an entry on the IEMA Acorn Register if you
choose to obtain external recognition on the way
- You learn the principles of environmental management as you go, so
that the company ends up with the in-house skills necessary to continue
to develop your EMS
