From no recognised system to ISO 14001
Chessington Garden Centre
Chessington Garden Centre is a family business that has been established
for over 36 years. They had an environmental vision for the future and
had established a number of improvement measures. Isostasy was invited
to review their performance so far and propose the best way forward, since
when Chessington Garden Centre has attained ISO 14001 registration and
is one of the first companies to use the BS8555 methodology to get there.
This has enabled them to make early moves in reducing their environmental
footprint. Consumption of both gas and electricity has reduced, despite
a growth in the business, and recycling has improved from 34% at the start
of the programme to a satisfying 80% of their waste stream now.
The use of Environmental Performance Indicators has provided a basis for
producing a Corporate Social Responsibility Performance Report (available
from their web-site) and enabled them to submit their entry to the Surrey
Sustainable Business Awards 2005 with a robust case study, where they
were overall winner in the medium business category.
This was followed in 2006 by reaching the finals of the SEEDA Sustainable
Business Awards and winning Kingston Guardian's Green Business Award.
The business is now firmly focussed on developing its sustainability agenda
well into the future. See Chessington Garden Centre's policy at www.chessingtongarden.co.uk/new/index.php?act=viewDoc&docId=32
Adding ISO 14001 to ISO 9001
Box IT
Box It is a document management company which operates
a national service including the collection, storage and delivery of document
boxes, together with a secure shredding capability. It was already certified
to ISO 9001:2000 but wished to extend its quality management system to
include environmental management and obtain ISO 14001:2004.
Isostasy was engaged to develop its system and in co-operation with Box
It's existing quality management consultancy, Hantec Systems, an integrated
management system was developed and implemented, leading to ISO 14001
certification using the same certifier and auditor as for their quality
system.

Developing an EMS in house through training and support
Supply Chain training- Eco Network Ltd
Isostasy has been working in partnership with Eco Network
Ltd to develop, design and deliver a series of training courses based
on the Phases of BS 8555. These courses have already been taken up by
3 major supply chain leaders and more are in the pipeline.
Fully-tested templates for use within their EMS together with between-course
e-mail support has enabled a number of companies to progress through BS
8555. Feedback from delegates rates these courses as Excellent and Good.
There is also favourable comment that the course material both practical
and based on experience of real-life scenarios.
